Creating White Light!

We are delighted to be back in school after out Christmas break. We have started off the new year on a bright note, by learning about light. We discovered that light is a form of energy, which travels in waves and there are many types of natural and artificial light. We learned about the seven colours in the spectrum of light and how these can be split using a prism. We also learned that we can blend these colours together to make white light. This got us thinking; could we make our own white light then? After making some predictions, we drew a circle with a compass and divided it up into seven sections. Next, we coloured each section one of the seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. After that we pierced the circle with a pencil and spun it, revealing white light. All the colours in the spectrum had blended together. Try it yourself at home to see the results! We are really looking forward to learning more things like this during this term!

Science Week! 🧪🔬
Science Week! 🧪🔬

We had a BLAST this science week. Fourth class participated in an experiment everyday, starting off with an investigation on the human body. We learned where to find our pulse, why we have one, what happens to our pulse when we exercise and why. On Tuesday we learned about forces by making paper helicopters and redesigning the wings to see how this changes the flight path. Wednesday had us dancing with some raisins where we learned more about density and floatation while on Thursday we experimented with chemical energy, mixing various substances, observing the reactions and hypothesising why this might be. Friday, we put our newfound knowledge to good use, and made our very own lava lamps! We are already looking forward to next year! 😄

Mindfulness, Yoga and Wellbeing 😊
Mindfulness, Yoga and Wellbeing 😊

After the school closures and COVID-19 restrictions, we are all well aware of how important it is to take care of our bodies and our minds. We place a big emphasis on this in 4th class because at the end of the day, if a child isn’t happy, they are not going to learn. Therefore, mindfulness is something we practice frequently, everyday. First thing in the morning, we write about how we are feeling in our Mindfulness Journals, to develop our emotional intelligence and awareness – two very valuable life skills.

We know how important nature is to our well-being, so we take ‘Brain Breaks’ between lessons, where we immerse ourselves in nature. Even a few minutes makes a huge difference. Sometimes we practice short meditations on the Headspace App, mindful breathing and body scans too.

We have learned about self-compassion and how important it is to be kind to ourselves. When we are feeling down, we should speak to ourselves as though we were speaking to a friend. What would we say to them in that situation? Would we criticise them or would we offer words of support? In the pictures below, you can see that we came up with some great quotes that our ‘inner friend’ might say to us at a time like this, and we stuck them are the room as inspiration for those times when we might be having some trouble.

We all came together and decorated a letter each for our full wall display of our class motto, ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated’.

For the past 6 weeks, we have been practicing yoga with Sue every Wednesday and we are really reaping the benefits in body and in mind.

Finally, at the end of each school day we write down three good things that happened that day or three things we’re grateful for. Through this, we learn to see the bright side of everything and continuously improve overall well-being.

🎃 Papier-Mâché Pumpkins 🎃
🎃 Papier-Mâché Pumpkins 🎃

Happy Halloween! We have been decorating our classroom for Halloween by making our own papier-mâché pumpkins. First we inflated balloons and then covered them in paper and a mixture of PVA glue and water. Then we set them to dry by the sun and when they were ready we painted them in our own daunting designs! 👻

🎻 Violin Lessons 🎻
🎻 Violin Lessons 🎻

As part of music generation, we have been learning violin this first term. Every Tuesday morning we practice and learn about the instrument, how it works, correct technique and of course play songs. Our repertoire has expanded over the past two months and we have developed a greater sense of pulse, rhythm, pitch and many more musical elements. Wellbeing is a big focus in our classroom and an appreciation of music is a lifelong gift that will help the children now and in the future.

All about Ancient Egypt
All about Ancient Egypt

We have been very busy in fourth class, learning all about ancient Egypt. The children learned about the pyramids at Giza, the Valley of the Kings, and how they were built using simple machines like levers and pulleys. They even made some of their own simple lever machines in the classroom with rulers, pens and rubbers. We discovered the hidden tombs of pharaohs like Tutankhamun and the method used to actually made real mummies! Children made beautiful Egyptian sunset silhouettes, where they worked on colour awareness, shading and blending and they also did a STEAM activity where they built their own pyramids from random cardboard boxes. Some pupils covered them in glitter so that it looked like the actual pyramids when they were built.

Blasting Off into Fourth Class! 🚀
Blasting Off into Fourth Class! 🚀

We have had a fantastic start to fourth class, learning all about our theme ‘Space’. We read recounts about The Space Race and Valentina Tereshkova, the first and youngest woman in space. The children also wrote their own recounts about big events in their lives. We learned about light as a form of energy, from natural and artificial sources and discussed the role played by the solar system in the changing of seasons. We studied early people and ancient societies like The Aztecs and the importance of the sun in their culture. We also learned about shading in art, and created our own solar system of planets. Everyone is looking forward to a great year ahead!
