Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!

We had such a fun week making spooky crafts and listening to ghoulish Halloween songs, but we especially enjoyed dressing up in our costumes and Trick or Treating around the school! We wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween midterm break 🙂

Our Interactive Panel
Our Interactive Panel

Our Interactive Panel is a fantastic resource for the children to engage in lots of literacy and numeracy games on websites such as www.starfall.com and www.education.com. It’s also an effective too for teaching the children to take turns as everyone is eager to have their go! Lots of games include following instruction to click on the correct letter, shape, number as well as counting games, sound blending games and spelling words. It teaches hand eye co ordination when dragging the letters/ numbers across the screen as well as developing and enhancing receptive communication and comprehension skills 🙂

Fun in the Sensory Room!
Fun in the Sensory Room!

It’s our favourite time of day, where we get to have fun bouncing on the trampoline, jumping in the ball pool, going on the slide, swinging on the swing and crawling through tunnels. We get a lot of our energy out here, working on our gross motor skills and co ordination. We also have fun learning to throw and kick the ball and climb over the climbing frame. After all our energetic fun, we like to have a sit in the dark tent, which is a nice corner for a little quiet time 🙂

Food Glorious Food!
Food Glorious Food!

This week, we worked on literacy and language skills around the topic of food. We played food matching and identifying games- look at the food picture and match it to your dinner plate (potato, waffles, ham, chicken, tomatoes, mushrooms, chips, fish etc.) Then when the plate was full we fed the “boy” (mouth opens into box) specific items of food on request. We listened to songs about fruits and vegetables- The singing walrus songs on You Tube, to build our vocabulary on foods. We were encouraged to say “I have mushrooms, I have chips” when matching food cards to their plates. The game also taught us turn taking skills, waiting to feed the hungry boy! As well as that, we took turns lacing fruits, bananas, oranges, apples, pears and plums. Plus, we even made a pretend pizza, yum! 🙂

Going to the Zoo!
Going to the Zoo!

Last week we learned about zoo animals. We listened to the song “Lets go to the Zoo” and copied the actions- waddle like a penguin, swim like a polar bear, climb like a monkey. We matched animal pictures and learned their names. Some of us worked on our reading skills by matching the name to the correct picture from a choice of three and put it under the correct animal. Others matched the small toy figurine to its picture. We painted paper plates to make an elephant, crocodile, monkey, zebra and a tiger and pasted on their eyes, mouths, ears and noses. After that, we did our best colouring in on our animal colour sheets. We also listened to the sounds they make and had fun repeating them (lion roars, monkey calls etc.) It’s fun to be a monkey! 🙂

Welcome Back!
Welcome Back!

Welcome to our new school year! We are sure to have lots fun and learning in our class this year 🙂

We introduced the new children to our coloured work stations, which are at the Red, Blue and Yellow table. They have settled really well into the routine of rotating between them for 8-10 minutes of work activities at each table, based on literacy, numeracy, fine motor and language skills. This week we were testing the children’s memory on colours, shapes, letters and numbers.

At BLUE station, we worked on matching, sorting and identifying colours. At RED station, we matched numbers and shapes, using both inset jigsaws and 3D Shape sorter boxes. We matched and identified numbers 1-10 using inset puzzle and a number flashcard book. At YELLOW station, we worked on identifying letters. We rolled and squished play-dough and stuck magnetic letters into it so we had to pull out letters and name them. We also matched letters to make 3 letter words- cat, dog, rat, sun.

In the Sensory room, everyone is having lots of fun! We enjoy bouncing on the trampoline, climbing up the slide, going on the swing, crawling through the tunnel, climbing up the frame and over the bridge as well as jumping into the ball pool! It’s a great room for burning energy and developing gross motor skills. In the big hall we had fun throwing and kicking large footballs around as well as walking and balancing on the benches.

At circle time, we all sit at the table and listen to our circle time songs such as Days of the Week, Months of the year, We are the Alphabet, numbers 1-10, How’s the Weather?, If you’re happy and Open Shut Them all by Super Simple Songs on You tube. We also take turns filling in the interactive calendar daily on Starfall.com and playing letter and number identification games on Education.com.

For art and crafts, we decorated our names by cutting out mosaic squares and pasted them on black paper to trace our names. We painted paper bowls and pasted petals on to make large flowers, which have a picture of our face in the middle of them. We have them hanging outside of our classroom in our “Kinder Garden” display.

What a busy first week it has been!! 🙂
