Active Week

Last week was active week in the Good Shepherd. There was lots of activities organised for the children to take part in and it was a huge success! Every afternoon the children had active homework instead of written or learning homework. There was a huge variety of sports going on in the school including glow soccer, boxing, yoga, dancing. Check out the pictures below to see what the Senior Language Class got up to during active week…

School Tour

After all their hard work this year, the children headed off on their well earned school tour to Go Kids Go! We went with Ms. Horgan’s class and had a blast in the wide variety of soft play areas. We had a hot lunch provided for us and after lunch we worked with clay to make figures from our imagination. There was time for soccer and more play before we had to catch the bus home. Everyone had a great day, check out some photos below!

Violin Recital

This week the children finished their Music Generation programme with Heather for this academic year. They rounded off the year with a recital for parents where they performed 3 pieces they had learned. The children did a wonderful job at the performance and are really looking forward to continuing their lessons next year. Well done to all involved!

Volcanoes

This month we were learning about volcanoes. The children made a volcano mould using a clay mixture and painted it. We made a little village surrounding the volcano and then we made the volcano erupt! We did this using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to create reaction and we added red food colouring and washing up liquid for extra effect! We also made papier mache volcanoes to recreate the explosion. Check out our pictures below…

Eggcellent Easter Fun!

We had great fun preparing for Easter by making “birds nests” using All Bran, chocolate and mini eggs in the cookery kitchen. We also had a blast on our Easter egg hunt where we searched all over the yard for Easter treasure! The children made lovely clay Easter eggs which they painted and decorated too. Well done to all the children on their hard work last term and we hope you enjoyed the holidays!

Trip to Costa!

The children worked very hard before the Easter break to achieve the goals they had agreed with Ms. Harding. As a reward and celebration of their great achievements, Ms. Harding treated them to a trip to Costa. Well done everyone!

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge was a great success with all the children making their best effort to use cúpla focal timpeall na scoile!! The children learned all about the history of St. Patrick and they learned a seanfhocal or proverb each day. We had a ceilí mór on Friday, where all the children learned two Irish jigs. We spent the week learning “Beidh Aonach Amárach” to prepare for our sing-along at assembly on Friday. Congratulations to Juliette who was our “Gaeilgeóir na Seachtaine”. Below is a picture of our Lá Glas;

World Book Day

We had a great week celebrating World Book Day with lots of exciting activities. The theme this year was an Irish one so we focused on Irish Myths and Legends. The children chose 3 of their favourite Irish myths to learn about; Children of Lir, Cú Chulainn and The Salmon on Knowledge. We learned all about the stories and acted them out in class. The children then chose characters from the legends to dress up as for our character parade on Friday. Check out our costumes below!

We also had a visit from a storyteller who really captured our imaginations by telling us two great stories. We invented our own characters then and drew pictures of them.

The book fair was also a huge hit and the children loved browsing the books for some new reading material.

Pancake Tuesday

We had great fun making pancakes for Pancake Tuesday! We looked up the recipe and decided on our favourite toppings before getting busy with the frying pan. Well done to all our little chefs in the making!

February Fun!

We’ve had a busy few weeks in the Senior Language Class. We had a very successful Grandparents Day on 31st January. We loved meeting all our students’ grandparents and hearing all about what school was like when they were young. We made cards and pictures for them and everyone had a great day.

We have also been learning about the Chinese New Year, we learned that 2019 is the Year of the Pig and we learned about the Chinese Zodiac Story. The children made Chinese lanterns to celebrate the Chinese New Year on 5th February.

We had a visit from a dietitian as part of the SuperValu Cooking Allstars Programme. She taught us about nutrition and simple recipes we can make ourselves.  We have been given lots of great equipment and recipes for our cookery. We are looking forward to getting started after midterm break.

Finally, we had a Valentine’s Bake Sale to raise funds for our school. We had lots of fun sampling all the treats and even had some left over to bring home for our families…Happy Valentine’s Everyone!
